Due to the steadily increasing volume of traffic, experts identified significant damage to the bridge piers in 2013. As a result, parts of the bridge were closed and the pier heads were reinforced. In 2014, the bridge was assessed to have a remaining service life only until 2026, prompting the initiation of plans for a replacement structure.
The new construction consists of two separate bridge structures, each with three lanes. Currently, the eastern half of the new bridge is under construction and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. Traffic will then be diverted from the existing bridge to the new one, allowing the old structure to be demolished. From 2028, the western half of the new bridge will be built, so that in future, one bridge will carry traffic heading south and the other north. The new motorway bridge will be 1,500 metres long and 42 metres high.
BCL is responsible for the construction logistics.
